Sag Harbor Cinema Reopening: Everything to Know

Explore What to Look Forward to When Sag Harbor Cinema Has Its Grand Reopening—and Find Out How You Can Help Streamline the Process

In 2016, the historic Sag Harbor Cinema Arts Center on East End was destroyed by a fire. However, there is good news on the horizon for art lovers: Sag Harbor Partnership, a 501c3 not-for-profit organization in charge of rebuilding the iconic theater on Main Street, recently reported that they had raised enough money to cover basic construction costs. The group is still asking for donations for the concession stand and equipment, computer equipment, salaries, restoration of historic furnishings, and a brand-new sound system.

Over Memorial Day weekend, the Sag Harbor Cinema Arts Center relit the iconic Sag Harbor sign on the front of the theater. Community members and village officials alike came out to celebrate the occasion. “Initially we were thinking we could wait until the Cinema opened to light the sign, but Memorial Day weekend felt like the perfect opportunity to celebrate not only the start of summer, but how far we have come on this journey,” Cinema Chair April Gornik told Patch.com at the time. The beloved neon sign was pulled intact from the wreckage in the aftermath of the fire, which many took as a hopeful reminder that they could rebuild from the ashes.

Following an extensive rebuilding project, the theater is expected to reopen sometime in the next few months. Once it does, locals and tourists alike will be able to enjoy its cinematic offerings once again. Those interested in donating to the ongoing rebuilding efforts recently had the chance to purchase artwork from the eBay for Charity Auction for the Cinema initiative, which took place in early September and featured 60 works of art from artists like Cindy Sherman, Eric Fischl, and Ross Bleckner. Individuals were also able to bid on experiences such as private yoga classes with Rodney Yee and Colleen Saidman, private shopping and fashion excursions, opening night at the New York Film Festival, and Broadway performances. Those who missed out on the charity sale but still want to support the relief efforts can make a tax-deductible contribution to the Sag Harbor Cinema Arts Center.
