Though Famous for Its Summer Skies, the Hamptons Has Plenty to Offer in Winter as Well
The Hamptons are synonymous with summer. Every year, New Yorkers flock to this seaside enclave for some much-needed R & R, passing the time swimming, sunbathing, and eating seafood at roadside diners. And while there’s no disputing that the Hamptons are magical in the warmer months, we’re here to let you in on a little secret: If you’ve never spent time there during the winter, you’re seriously missing out. Here’s why the Hamptons are the perfect winter getaway.
No Crowds
Let’s face it, everyone loves summering in the Hamptons. But sometimes it can feel just a little too crowded and congested. Solve that problem by visiting in the winter months, when the crowds have cleared out, hotel prices have dropped, and dinner reservations are easier to come by. Those who spend time in the Hamptons during the colder months will be treated to a slower pace of life and a fraction of the traffic. After heading to the Hamptons this winter, you’ll quickly realize why visiting in the off-season has some serious perks.
Fun Winter Activities
We can already hear your biggest complaint: But it’s too cold to go to the beach during the winter. And while it’s true that the beaches are a main attraction, there are plenty of other ways to fill your time.
If you have kids, take them to the Gingerbread University in Riverhead. GingerElves are on hand to help you and your kiddos craft a gingerbread home during a one-hour decorating session. Gingerbread, icing, and candy are all provided to help fuel some sugar-filled family fun. Reservations are encouraged during peak holiday times, but walk-ins will be allowed based on available seating.
You can also get in the holiday spirit by ice skating at Buckshill Winter Club in East Hampton. As the only outdoor, NHL-sized ice rink in the Hamptons, this is the place to be if you want the ultimate ice skating experience. Simply lace up a pair of skates (which can be rented at the rink) and embark on a romantic date or a lively night out with friends. Afterwards, head to the clubhouse to enjoy a mug of steaming hot chocolate from the full-service snack bar.
Easy Access to Local Attractions
Another perk of being in the Hamptons during the winter holidays is that you can get into local attractions without the long wait times and crowds. If you haven’t yet made it to the historic Montauk Lighthouse, which was constructed in 1796 and designated a National Historic Landmark in 2012, there’s no time like the present. Open year-round, hours do change frequently depending on the weather, so check the website to make sure the lighthouse is open before you make the trek. Admission is $12 for adults, $5 for children.
If you love shellfish, end your day with a visit to Widow’s Hole Oyster Farm in Greenport. Once there, you can tour the farm, see how oysters are grown, and shuck and sample them for yourself. Or make a reservation at one of the hard-to-get-into restaurants like Nick & Toni’s, a farmhouse-style eatery with a to-die-for Mediterranean menu.
